Don't freak out: Consolation for if your candidate loses

Whatever happens tonight—and we'll be liveblogging everything beginning at around 6 p.m.—roughly half the country is going to experience some serious despair. Whether you pulled the lever for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, here are some reasons everything will be all right, even if your guy doesn't come out on top.

If Obama loses

1. We don't know what Romney will do: Political chameleonism is a reason that many people have offered in voting against Romney, but if he wins, that same trait may be a source of solace. He claims to be a conservative, but he governed Massachusetts as a relative moderate. He invented Obamacare, supported a woman's right to choose, and claimed he would be better on gay rights than Ted Kennedy. Since around the time of the first debate, he's returned to his former moderate form. It's entirely possible that he'll govern that way. Not the brightest of hopes, perhaps, but better than nothing.
