Student groups conduct mock arrests during 'Right to Education week'

Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine and Students Against Mass Incarceration are conducting mock arrests on Low Steps. The demonstration is meant to raise awareness of issues that affect Palestinian students as well as students here in the United States, according to demonstrators.

It's part of these groups' observation of Right to Education week---started by Birzeit University in Palestine, the campaign aims "to defend Palestinans' right to education," according to the movement's web page.

"Consciousness-raising is the primary goal, especially on a campus such as this one where there tends to be silence, or if not silence just purposefully ignoring the issues," said Randolph Carr, CC '13, of SAMI. "People here often purposely ignore issues that affect people throughout this world."
