Rakhi Agrawal reports from last night's Columbia College Student Council meeting, the penultimate meeting of the semester:
Bwog and brownstones: Members of the executive board said they were bothered by homophobic and anti-Greek remarks made by some commenters on the Bwog post announcing that Alpha Chi Omega, Lambda Phi Epsilon, and Q House had won three 114th Street brownstones, and they asked the rest of the council whether or not CCSC should respond. Some representatives said it wasn't the council’s place to issue a statement or take any action, while others felt it was important to issue a statement expressing intolerance for offensive comments or support for the brownstone review process.
Council members asked several Bwog editors in attendance whether they had any plans to respond to or monitor offensive comments, but they didn't have any comment. After straw polls indicated that council members were split between responding to the comments and not responding to the comments, the executive board decided it would continue deliberating and report back to the council next week.
Goodbye, College Days: Vice President for Campus Life Yanyi Luo, CC ’13, said that CCSC will be getting rid of College Days this spring. Instead, the council is organizing the first-ever Columbia Music Fest, a week-long endeavor in which CCSC will partner with Live at Lerner, Bacchanal, WBAR, WKCR, Postcrypt Coffeehouse, and other groups to produce musical events. Columbia Music Fest will take place the week of Mon., April 8, concluding with Bacchanal on Sun., April 14. In addition, CCSC will sponsor one big music group to come to campus for a performance related to the week's theme: synesthesia.
