Professor Sylvia Nasar, co-director of Columbia Journalism School’s master’s in business journalism program, filed summons on Jan. 7 against the University for more than $900,000, alleging that her compensation from an endowment package was inadequate, Capital New York reported.
Columbia received the grant in 1998 from the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation to create a Knight Chair in Business Journalism—a position that allows journalists to take positions as tenured professors at universities.
The grant, which supplements Nasar's base salary, was to be used to help "invent a business reporting curriculum for the 21st century," according to the Knight Foundation's website.
