The opera, for those who want to go into the city more

With discounted tickets available through CUArts and an entire city at our disposal, we really should get out into the city more. In this new series, our opera critic will save you the time of planning an outing by designing a night at the opera (and in the city) for those who want to try something new.

The hottest (and possibly most controversial) show onstage at the Metropolitan Opera this month is the company’s new production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” The original setting places the action in sixteenth century Renaissance Italy, but in this updated staging by Tony-Award-winning director Michael Mayer, the story of decadence, seduction, and a fateful curse plays out against the backdrop of 1960s Las Vegas. For this first “Night at the Opera,” we've planned an evening of events inspired by this classic of the operatic repertory.

Before enjoying this quintessentially Italian opera, enjoy a bite to eat of delicious Italian cuisine. In keeping with the theme of this evening, try the aptly named Rigoletto’s Pizza at 141 W. 72nd St. Stop in for a single slice of thin crust pizza or share a whole pizza with friends (or that special someone) before heading just a few blocks downtown to the opera house in the heart of Lincoln Center.
