Day One of Suite Selection is a wrap---here’s a rundown on what took place in John Jay lounge today and what we can expect to go down tomorrow.
In what has become a yearly tradition, the morning started off with frustrated students discovering that certain choice suites had been held out without warning. Of particular note were the two four-person townhouses which turned out to be unavailable---this was bad news for groups of four who had been hoping to snag one or, alternatively, snag a Hogan or Ruggles four-person suite later on in the round. The trickle-down effect proved powerful, as four-person groups throughout the day lamented what could have been if all the four-person townhouses were available.
Another common gripe heard this morning was the elimination of the UAH apartments. For some seniors, this meant they were “forced” to select a Watt two-bedroom apartment, so we can’t really feign much pity for them. Others, farther down on the ladder, had hoped to sneak into a two-bedroom apartment, but were out of luck and had to select a two-person flat in EC or Woodbridge one-bedroom apartment.
Outside of these complaints, nothing about today’s proceedings was especially unexpected. Over the course of the day, a number of suite types were wiped clean: EC Highrise all-single suites and four-person townhouses, non-RA Hogan suites, two-bedroom apartments in Watt and Woodbridge, and Ruggles four-person suites. We also saw all of the six-person RA townhouses go, some of them being filled by groups who didn’t actually know their future RA and RA rider suitemates. The fact that multiple groups chose to do this just goes to show how unpopular Claremont is, since these groups also had Claremont four-person suites as options. Finally, the majority of the two-person flats in EC were filled along with a handful of rooms in Woodbridge and the first few EC Exclusion suites.
So where does that leave us for tomorrow? Well, with just four two-person flats left, they could be gone in a flash---the fourth two-person group to pick is 30/1634, followed by 30/1726 and 30/1734, although a streak of Woodbridge selections could keep them alive for longer. Additionally, there are still three unclaimed all-single townhouses, so we can predict a cutoff of 30/1677 for those. Once those are gone, the six-person groups will have to choose between the townhouses with a double (there’s five of them) and dropping to Senior Regroup or General Selection. The lingering four-person suites in Claremont should also be taken by some reluctant seniors. Other than that, most of the action will surround ECX’s, Watt one-bedroom apartments, and Woodbridge high- and medium-demand lines (as well as the final three-person Claremont suite and the Hogan RA suites). The day will conclude with Senior Regroup, which, truthfully, will bring more of the same (Woodbridge, Watt, and ECX’s), just in a much more hectic manner. However, desperation mixed with tense emotions can often lead to peculiar decision-making, so nothing is set in stone.
We’ll be back here tomorrow morning at 9:30 to cover it all for you. Tune in then for more Housing goodness. As always, we’ll be keeping an eye on the comments section if you need any help.

Has the 10th floor of EC been renovated?
Don't think so
i lived there last year and it had been renovated a view years before. it has hardwood floors like all the newly renovated EC highrises do
Thoughts of a 25 point group getting a Watt 1-BR after tomorrow?
thanks man. U guys are awesome!
unrelated to suite selection. rising junior, general selection with a number in the 300's. what exactly is the ideal building for a single? Broadway? Schapiro?Harmony? Nussbaum? can anyone give a rundown in terms of pros and cons? I've been inside the buildings but I've never actually seen the dorms.
thanks!
People around 20/300 were usually choosing among the last of the River singles, the last of the Broadway singles, and the best of the Schapiro singles. Nussbaum should be gone by then. River and Broadway are typically more desirable buildings, but when you're choosing between the best in a worse building and the worst in a better building, it all comes down to personal preferences.
