Columbia Public Safety officer in critical condition after being hit by car

A Columbia Public Safety officer is in critical condition at St. Luke’s Hospital after being hit by a car over the weekend.

Lawrence Humphrey was hit near 116th Street by a Nissan Maxima headed south on Amsterdam Avenue at about 11 p.m. on Aug. 10, according to police.

Humphrey was immediately taken to the intensive care unit at St. Luke’s Hospital. The driver remained at the scene and the police say the crash doesn’t appear to involve criminal activity.

“Officer Humphrey is a seventeen year veteran of the Department of Public Safety and a valued member of our team,” Vice President for Public Safety James McShane said in an email. “Please keep Officer Humphrey in your thoughts as we pray for his speedy recovery.”

According to hospital staff, Humphrey remains in critical, but stable condition.
