Woman shot dead in St. Nicholas Houses Sunday morning

A 24-year-old woman was found shot to death Sunday morning on the sixth floor of a building in the St. Nicholas Houses in Central Harlem.

A New York Police Department spokesperson said that the police responded to a 911 call early Sunday morning about a non-responsive person inside 240 West 129th St., near Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.

“Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified adult female unconscious and unresponsive, with gunshot wounds to her torso and a laceration to the face,” the spokesperson said.

Ambulance crews arrived at the location shortly after and transported the victim to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The victim was later identified as Mendy P. Gashier from East 135th Street, a significant distance from the murder scene. The New York Daily News reported that a blood trail from the woman led to a vacant apartment in the building.

The crime falls within the jurisdiction of the 32nd Precinct, but there have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing, according to the NYPD.
