For the first time in my life, baseball is relevant. In my first two years of writing this column, I have made it a point to stay away from professional sports and discuss Columbia athletics and the Ivy League—with a few references to my other college team, UCLA.

The first time I ever picked up a newspaper was Nov. 8, 2000. “BUSH WINS,” one headline read. Another read “Bush and Gore Vie for an Edge with Narrow Electoral Split.” I supported Al Gore at the time—although please note, I was 12 and had never read a newspaper.

“Because they have to.” Columbia and Barnard students take the same classes, join the same clubs, and all have at least one good friend on the other side of the street. This means that we’ve all been inconvenienced by the lack of access to a dorm across Broadway at some point.

It wasn’t until after I unpacked into my dorm that I found my dad’s letter. Not until after I’d said to my mum, as we were driving up for my second year at Barnard, “I think this summer Dad talked to Penny more than to me.”
Penny is the family beagle.
