It was a weekend of ups and downs for the Columbia women’s basketball team (2-4), as it faced Mercer (2-4) on Saturday and Army (3-2) on Sunday. In the end, the Lions came away with a slim win and a big, fat loss.

I’ve always wondered why it is that scrub players stick around in their respective sports (besides, of course, the paycheck). Many of them will never get the chance to start, or play in any meaningful game, or even make it onto an active roster.

Unpredictable, evasive, incomprehensible—these epithets have all been thrown Bob Dylan’s way. Director Todd Haynes’ new film, I’m Not There, which analyzes and deconstructs Dylan by using six actors to play him, has already been accused of similar pretension and obliquity.

It was thoughtfully suggested to me that my last column, which appeared on Veterans’ Day, should perhaps have had something to do with the on-again/off-again relationship between Columbia and the military.
