An open mind can be very rewarding in many situations, especially in the classroom. Such an outlook allows students to learn, not just from the professor, but also from each other. I recently witnessed one of the most offensive comments I have ever heard in a classroom setting.

One of the most frequent surprises I encounter at Columbia is other people's shock that I am from Kansas. "Really?" they exclaim in disbelief. "Well, you don't seem like you're from there," they reassure me, as if mending a momentary betrayal.

Last month my good friend broke up with a girl he had known for less than 24 hours. What had begun as a harmless offer to sleep in his bed (she was tired, didn't want to walk home, he figured he'd sleep on the couch) quickly turned into the mother of all disasters.
