At the beginning of the season, Columbia softball head coach Kayla Noonan noted that, "we have a couple freshman who I think are going to be exciting to watch." Noonan's predictions were right on, as freshmen Keli Leong and Valerie Smith, have become two of the best players on the team.

Back in September, I arrived on campus after a sluggish three and a half months spent watching the grass grow in Mississippi. I quickly learned that I had forgotten to pack a few items. OK, a lot of items.

Quick starts have been common in Columbia athletics this year. Football roared to a 2-0 start, but finished sluggishly with no wins in the Ivy League and a 2-8 overall record. Basketball raced out to a 6-2 start, but finished a mediocre 11-16 (4-10 in Ivy).

For the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, activism is in the blood. Formed 10 years ago after a student hunger strike and sit-ins, the center's creation was about much more then building a department. It was about changing the way the University thinks.
