With Paul Nixon entering the season as the fourth head coach in as many years, it was definitely a rebuilding year for the women's basketball team. Their inexperience certainly showed in the standings, as the team finished 6-21 overall, 2-12 in the Ivy League.

Brett Boretti gave no guarantees of winning when he took the head coaching position for Columbia baseball last summer. He did not promise to take Columbia to the top of the Ivy League or issue any bold statements about a return to glory.

Although the season did not turn out as well as Columbia had hoped, a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Championships in Houston salvaged the year. The Lions came in second at the Ivy Championships, behind the Harvard Crimson, who also took the national championship.

The women's swimming and diving team had the best season in its history, finishing 2005-2006 with an 8-3 dual meet record and a best-ever third-place finish at the Ivy League Championships.

The Columbia men's swimming team entered the 2005-2006 season with high hopes. With strong newcomers in addition to a squad of talented veterans, the Lions were looking to capture their first league title and end the Harvard-Princeton stranglehold over Ivy League swimming.

While Men's tennis showed flashes of brilliance early in the season, erratic and inconsistent play dismissed hopes of an Ivy League title. The Lions finished the year at 13-5 overall and 4-3 in Ivy League competition, good enough for a share of third place in the conference.

After coming off of a record-breaking season in 2004-2005, when the Columbia wrestling team placed fourth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association and then-sophomore Matt Palmer earned All-American status in the NCAA, the 2005-2006 season proved more difficult for the Lions.
