About a week ago I noticed that Harlem doesn't like me. Wandering around the 132nd Street area with a friend, I couldn't help but notice a sign because it was about twenty feet tall. "Stop Columbia!" it said, "We won't be pushed out!" and then repeated the message in Spanish.

I grew up in Iowa. Although I moved to the big city early enough to learn that talking about cow-tipping and county fairs was not entirely socially acceptable, my Lula Mae core is still sometimes exposed from underneath my Holly Golightly polish, especially when I open my mouth.

On December 9, 2005, two Columbia students defaced a Ruggles suite with swastikas, racial epithets, and homophobic graffiti. Agitated by a critical mass of student activists, the administration responded unequivocally: hate had no place on Columbia's campus.
