Czech playwright Vaclav Havel adapted his highly politicized version of The Beggar's Opera from an earlier version written by John Gay in 1727 after Gay had been blacklisted as a playwright. Havel wrote the play for his friends to perform, and he intended to pass it off as Gay's play.
