Edmund Phelps, McVickar professor of political economy, was awarded the Nobel Prize on Monday "for his analysis of intertemporal tradeoffs in macroeconomic policy," according to the Nobel foundation's Web site. See the full article in tomorrow's paper.

I am an immigrant in the United States. I am also a student at Columbia University. After the disappointing actions of a few self-proclaimed activists at last week's Minuteman forum, for the first time, I am embarrassed to be both.

In the aftermath of the protest on the night of Oct. 4 against Jim Gilchrist and the racist Minutemen at Roone Arledge Auditorium, we want to state clearly: we are proud to send the message to the country that racist and fascist groups are not welcome at Columbia or in New York City.

The only girl I know to have read every page of Lit Hum reading considered dropping out last week. Due to financial issues, she may not simply transfer to a more affordable school but may be giving up on higher education altogether.

It's easy to dismiss protestors as nothing more than rabble-rousers inanely chanting about peace and love and all that idealistic hippie brouhaha. Activists themselves often speculate as to whether protesting is an effective means of bringing about change.
