Whenever Ohio State football beats Michigan, students storm the field. Whenever Maryland basketball beats Duke, students storm the court. Whenever liberal Columbia students don't like a conservative speaker, they storm the stage. Clearly, Columbia needs a better athletics program.

In the wake of the Minuteman fiasco, there have been calls from all sides for rational debate. Rational debate does not include storming of stages, heckling, or violent confrontation; it involves a choice to listen and contemplate, and it involves honesty within discourse.

Columbia is an exciting place to go to college, with opportunities for adventure both on and off campus. But, unfortunately, it is impossible to take advantage of those opportunities if, like many Columbians, one lacks the financial resources to pay for them.

Recently, Columbia has been fraught with numerous instances of miscommunication. In the wake of the he-said-she-said hockey debacle and the Minuteman protest, another incident of equal importance has been overshadowed.

After the final whistle sounds, most Columbia University athletes realize that their childhood dreams of being a professional athlete will never become a reality. After all, only 15 percent of all collegiate athletes go on to become professional athletes.

About six months ago, Uche Osadebe's coaches approached him with a strange request. Coming off his best season, with an all-Ivy honorable mention on the defensive line, Osadebe was asked by head coach Norries Wilson to switch to the offensive side.
