When I arrived on Columbia's campus at the end of August, I had no idea what to expect from the Core Curriculum. Sure, I had said in my application that it was one of the main reasons I felt drawn to the University.

I first taught Lit Hum in 1954 as a graduate student, an experience that shaped all the teaching I have done since. I taught the course as a senior professor when I returned to Columbia in the '70s, and several times subsequently, but not in recent years.

Frontiers of Science is unique and demanding. The course samples the full range of modern science in a single semester-to students with very different science backgrounds-in sufficient depth to be meaningful, in a stimulating, comprehensive, coherent, and understandable way.

The Columbia baseball team (4-9-1) will open its Ivy League schedule on March 24-25 with back-to-back doubleheaders against Penn (5-7) at Philadelphia. The series, which opens Ivy play for the Lions, is crucial for success in the league for the young Lions squad.

The Columbia softball team (9-10) will open Ivy League play this weekend as it takes on Penn (8-6) in a pair of doubleheaders. The Lions will play two games against the Quakers on March 24 in Philadelphia, and then both teams will come to New York for the Light Blue's home opener on March 25.

After a highly successful weekend in Palm Bay, Florida at the FIT Invitational, men's heavyweight rowing heads to Princeton on March 24 to face Navy and guest George Washington at the Maxwell Stevenson Cup. Head coach Mike Zimmer expects his rowers to encounter some close races this weekend.

Columbia lacrosse is still carrying the disappointment with them from its spring break matches against a top-20 team, Richmond, on March 13 and Ivy rival, Cornell, on March 17-a pair of losses that certainly could have turned in Columbia's favor.

Men's tennis (8-3) plays its last non-Ivy match of the season at home today against St. Joseph's. The result will not affect the Lions' chances for NCAA tournament eligibility, which will be determined only by their Ivy record.
