Mike White's new film, Year of the Dog, impresses with such understated comedy that, at times, it can be mistaken for pure bleakness. Ultimately, though, one comes away with an unexpectedly hopeful and uplifting feeling.

Whoever wrote the clever tagline for Bravo's newest reality competition should be promoted. The show, Shear Genius, is a contest for hair stylists. The tagline-brace yourself-is "Lather. Rinse. Compete." That is sheer genius.

The University is set to receive a $400 million donation from media mogul John Kluge, CC '37. University President Lee Bollinger confirmed in an interview last night that the donation, to be bequeathed following Kluge's death, is the largest in Columbia's 253-year history.
