College surprised the writer in me. While in high school, my friends and I developed a bad habit of writing about each other. But when I arrived at Barnard, I signed up for fiction writing, and tried to keep what was written on the page separate from what was happening in my life.

I almost did not write this column. I did not devote enough time to Spectator to deserve it, I thought, though I held two editorships, am leaning toward a journalism career, and am fortunate to count numerous exceptional Speccies among my closest friends.

Earlier in the year I put the University on task to support its student-run gay organizations on campus; specifically, I mentioned that Columbia needed to do more to foster further understanding of the queer community.

In ancient times, you had to go down to Egypt for slavery, or be conquered by the Romans. But in modern times, we are the first generation to have voluntarily chosen this lifestyle, and luckily, it's available right here in New York City.

A few weeks ago students were dismayed to learn that Hot Jazz, Alpha Delta Phi's annual event and a hallmark of the Columbia experience, had been cancelled due to fire code regulations.

Walking around the Columbia campus, it is generally easy to identify members of the football or basketball teams given their larger size and builds compared to normal students. For some athletes there is the unique opportunity to blend in with the crowd.

Glancing at the statistics for the Columbia softball team in its series against Cornell this weekend, one number in particular jumps off the page. Out of a total 25 innings played, freshman pitcher Aimee Kemp stood atop the mound for 22 and two-thirds of them, starting all four games.

Lions softball finished up the last of its Ivy League games last weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. It was not the end of the Ivy season that the team was looking for.
