Maybe living in a fascist society would not be so bad. Sure, the government intervenes in what you say and do and you have little privacy, but the streets are clean, the trains run on time, and there is very little crime.

It was an evening class. A girl asked a technical question. I had not slept for days, having to prepare a talk on my thesis work. Her words came through a thick haze. In the strange light, her hair looked curly and red. I could barely understand what she was asking.
