Magda al-Nowaihi, Associate Professor of Arabic Literature, passed away after a seven-year-long battle with ovarian cancer. Al-Nowaihi was a dedicated member of the Columbia faculty, maintaining close ties with students and colleagues even while on leave this past spring.

Growing up on Long Island, an oversized sandbar criss-crossed by parkways and dotted with parking lots, I always dreamt of the day when I would be able to drive myself to the mall instead of having to ask my shopping-phobic mother to transport me there in the family station wagon.
