I walked into Alfred Lerner Hall the other day and saw a small memorial set up for the fallen Columbia giant. While there hasn't been an excess of hoopla over Lerner's death, the fall of a sports mogul and the Light Blue fall season seem to have a symbolic connection.

Oscar Chow is not accustomed to losing. In his first two years at Columbia, the men's tennis team won the Ivy League championship. He was named to the All-Ivy First Team in his sophomore and junior years.

I don't like clowns. I have never found them funny. Big shoes, hair and noses, honking horns, flowers squirting water--none of these amuse me. I was therefore prepared to dislike The New York Goof's production of Clown Brain on the sole basis of its title.
I was proven correct.

Comic opera may appear to be an oxymoron. Opera with a set that looks as though it detached itself from a Frank Gehry building may seem even more anachronistic. The New York City Opera's new adaptation of Emmanuel Chabrier's L'Etoile says otherwise.
