Should we talk about the weather? Should we talk about the government? These past weeks, if anyone had asked, I would have intoned a verse from William Carlos Williams: "These are the desolate, dark weeks / when nature in his barrenness / equals the stupidity of man."

Why would we do community service? The quick response from the idealist: "To help others!" The quick response from the cynic: "To boost resumés!" But at this point in our lives at this particular institution, we ought to examine even more closely the benefits of doing service.

After traveling to every football stadium and basketball gym in the Ivy League, I'm as qualified as anyone to rate them. The criteria I use are slightly skewed, however. They're all rated on the scale of a media person.

"Bring It On," the first single from Nick Cave's Nocturama, opens with his band, the Bad Seeds, playing a riff that is clearly derived from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly. It's hard to communicate what a bad idea this is.
