In celebration of the University's 250th anniversary, Spectator ranked the 250 greatest Columbians through the ages, from number 250 to number 1. The project began on Oct. 17, 2003 with the 250th alum, Chet Forte, CC 1957.

When we began this project last September, we had no idea what we were getting into. Ranking the 250 greatest Columbia alumni seemed like a good idea at the time, and a simple enough task.

By now, we can all accept that Columbia250 wasn't all it was cracked up to be. From the no-show Erykah, to the inebriated Wyclef, to the wooden cake, the whole deal seemed to fall flat on its face. And why the hell were the cupcakes (substituted for the cake) black and white?

Much of the time that has elapsed since the protest earlier this year has been spent in talking, planning, and strategizing about the most effective ways to make Columbia University truly committed to issues of diversity and ensuring the safety, both physically and rhetorically, of all students.

This page has often asked Columbia administrators to act within very short time frames. But this summer the University has the opportunity to take its time in resolving a number of problems facing students. When we return in the fall, we hope to find these five issues addressed:
