University of Pennsylvania football coach Al Bagnoli has grown accustomed to losing All-Ivy players en masse. Following the 2002 season, when the Quakers went 9-1 (7-0 Ivy), Bagnoli bade farewell to five First Team players. If Penn missed these players in 2003, though, they did not show it.

Well, it"s sure been a long time since that happened. The field hockey team, at one point in its early history giving its fans the illusion that it might actually follow its Ivy foes and become a national power, hadn"t posted an Ivy League win since beating Penn 1-0 in overtime in 2001.

Riko Higuma comes here on cigarette breaks from work at the Manhattan School of Music. Sometimes she watches the blooming cherry trees or listens to the splash of water around the small fountain. Other times she pays attention to nothing at all.
