Inconsistent hitting coupled with a struggling defense led to another disappointing series for Columbia baseball as they were swept at home by Harvard 5-3 and 13-3. The losses dropped the Lions to 1-5 to open their conference play and left them in last place in the Gehrig division.

The 2004-05 Penn Quakers were supposed to be a far cry from their illustrious predecessors. Gone were the stalwarts of the team’s undefeated 2002-03 Ivy campaign, including Ugonna Onyekwe, Koko Archibong, Charlie Copp and Jeff Schiffner.

I grew up in the depths of suburbia, an hour from Detroit and 15 minutes from anything worth seeing. I therefore vowed in high school that I’d go to college in a city with a good mass transit system, which I figured was a strong indicator of its cultural scene.
