When I was a freshman, working on the campaign of Mark Green, a Democrat who ran against Michael Bloomberg for New York City mayor in 2001, felt like the right thing to do. So I signed up with a friend and handed out campaign literature on 103rd Street the day before the election.

A couple of weeks ago, Columbia students were unable to log into their e-mail accounts. Academic Information Systems, it turns out, was having difficulties handling the large volumes of information being sent across the server, effectively shutting it down for many that week.

Those who know me realize that I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately. I barely leave my room, I never turn on ESPN, I stopped throwing things at Barry Bonds’ image on TV. Basically, my faith in American sports has been seriously challenged, and Barry’s annoying whining can’t even get me going.
