Lightning delays turned the Lions' prime-time kickoff into a late night battle Saturday, but the delays didn't prevent Columbia from defeating Fordham 23-17 to open the 2005 season. The win reclaimed the Liberty Cup for the first time since 2002.

As convincing a win as this was for the players, the Columbia skeptic in me wants to dismiss this victory as the fluke win of another 1-9 season. But this was a different win. This was not a fluke.
