Until this summer, I had never operated a standard commercial motor vehicle. I was scared to death of driving. Some see the driver’s seat as a gateway to freedom and independence, but I only ever saw an adjustable, plush, polyester-covered ticket to the afterlife.

I was almost positive that I was going to Howard for a semester when I heard about Columbia’s domestic exchange program in fall of 2009. Then I went to the info session and heard about Spelman, and my thoughts changed.

The blue Real Estate One sign stuck out of the rocks on the shore. The dock had rotted years before, and zebra mussels, an invasive species that looks like striped pistachios, populated the shallows. The house itself, protected from view, needed repairs.
