In brief: Rowing

Members of the men’s lightweight and women’s rowing teams were among the 9,000 athletes competing at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass., this weekend, finishing with moderate success in their various events.

In the 49th year of the prestigious regatta, teams representing the Lions competed in four different events. Men’s lightweight rowed in both the Lightweight Eights and Club Eights. In the Club Eights, the boat led by senior Anders Smedsrud placed ninth in a race of seventeen. In a field of seventeen in the Lightweight Eights, sophomore Colin Ross led his boat to a slightly better seventh-place finish with a time of 15:33.809. Smedsrud’s and Ross’ boats had each placed in the Head of the Passaic and Head of the Housatonic Regattas of the previous weekend.

The Head of the Charles was the first competition of the fall season for the women. In the Championship Eights, sophomore Colleen Condon’s boat completed the race in 17:34.398, earning seventeenth place among thirty-nine teams. Alongside Condon were first-years Maddy Pollock and Giovanna Crozier-Fitzgerald, both competing as Lions for the first time.

The men’s and women’s teams will compete next in the Princeton Chase on Oct. 27.
