Denburg and dining discussions at SGA

Highlights from last night’s Barnard Student Government Association meeting:

  • Vice President of College Relations Dorothy Denburg discussed her plans for more Barnard alumnae outreach and programs that facilitate communication between current students and alumnae. Denburg---who served on SGA herself in the late 1960s---also commended SGA for its achievements.
  • Columbia women's basketball coach Paul Nixon and Director of Sports Marketing Daniel Spiegel came to the meeting to promote the women's basketball team's Barnard Appreciation Night, which will take place on Saturday. Barnard Appreciation Night will be coupled with a program promoting breast cancer awareness, which will include fundraising. Limited-edition t-shirts will be given away to the first 300 attendees at the game.
  • Malvina Kefalas, BC ’14 and SGA's academic affairs representative, gave an update on the work she has been doing this year. She is working on getting a student academic advisory committee started, and is sending out a survey to collect student feedback on curriculum changes and graduation requirements. She is also planning an event for students to interact with Barnard’s faculty and administration, and to voice any concerns they have directly to administrators.
  • Students can now nominate students, staff, and faculty members on eBear for Barnard’s prestigious Leadership Dinner. A new award is being presented this year called the Frederick A.P. Barnard award, which will be given to a Columbia student who has significantly contributed to Barnard.
  • Deborah Robertson, BC ’13 and SGA's campus policy representative, gave a presentation on the work she has been doing to improve student dietary options, and the work she has done to improve Barnard’s environmental sustainability. She is currently trying to create more easily identifiable recycling signs on campus and get a water spigot installed in the Diana Café, which she hopes will motivate students to use reusable water bottles instead of disposable plastic ones.
  • Robertson has also been working with Aramark---which operates Barnard's dining halls---to improve students' dining experience at Hewitt by providing organic poultry and produce. They're now working on adding more variety for students with dietary restrictions, including gluten-free students.
