I never warmed up to icebreakers.
Maybe it’s because “Naomi” isn’t conducive to name games. It doesn’t rhyme with anything except “bologna,” which is a gross way to be remembered and an imperfect rhyme anyway.
Maybe it’s because after years of listening to people name their favorite ice cream flavors, I’m still waiting for that “Well,-I-sure-am-glad-I-know-he-likes-Moose-Tracks” moment.
Or maybe it’s because I never win icebreaker games. In the past two weeks—my first as a Columbia student—I lost countless limbs in the bloody game of Ultimate Ninja and devolved from dinosaur to chicken in the not-so-scientific game of Evolution. These icebreakers required skill sets, like rock-paper-scissors prowess and keeping track of both arms at the same time, that I didn’t have. It wasn’t the first impression of glorious victory I was hoping for.
Remembering people’s names proved even more difficult than remembering where my arms were. Some names kept popping up, which made me suspect that either I possess a unique gravitational pull that only works on people named Stephen, or that Stephen happens to be the name of every other person in the freshman class. Whatever the case, everything I have retained about the names of the class of 2015 can be summed up in this pie chart:
With orientation over and classes beginning, I’ve come to terms with the reality that I might never be the Ultimate Ninja.
But I will be blogging for the Spectrum this semester, and that’s a close second.
