Yesterday, Columbia announced two hirings for the rowing teams in Malcolm Doldron and Scott Ramsey. Doldron has been named as the assistant women’s rowing coach, while Ramsey has been added as a second women’s assistant coach.
Doldron is the second recent hire from Princeton, following Scott Alwin, who was hired last week. For the past two seasons, Doldron has acted as a volunteer assistant coach for the Tigers’ women’s rowing teams that finished second and third, respectively, at the Eastern Athletic Women’s Rowing Conference sprints the past two seasons. Both teams also competed at the NCAA Championships.
In addition to his duties at Princeton, Doldron has been the Junior “A” sweep coach and coxswain coach for the U.S. Junior Women’s National Team Development Camp, where five of his boats earned gold medals at the U.S. Rowing Club National Championships.
“He’s coached a number of teams in different places, and has become very knowledgeable about rowing,” women’s head coach Melanie Onufrieff said. “He also has developed many relationships throughout the rowing world that will help our program a lot. He is an outstanding addition to the Columbia rowing staff.”
Ramsey, a 2004 graduate of Penn, comes to Columbia after two years at the Agnes Irwin School and one year at St. Joseph’s Prep. While at Agnes Irwin, Ramsey was promoted to the head coaching position after one year as an assistant. In only one year as a sweeps program, Ramsey coached Agnes Irwin to the Inter-Ac League championship in 2007.
In addition to his rowing credentials, Ramsey adds prowess to the Columbia weight-room staff as he is a certified strength and conditioning coach.
