The Lighter Side of Spectator

Advertisements for Spectator, or
"house" ads as the staff calls them, are generally used to fill space
when the staff discovers an article is too short mere minutes
before the deadline.

To read the old house ads and April Fool's Day mastheads is to
glimpse the often odd humor of the Spectator staff.

Though most students are not so sharp during graveyard hours,
some Spec night owls manage to rise to the occasion.

The 114th board, for example, apparently could not contain their
sexual frustration. Granted, Spectator runs into the wee
hours of morning, when hormone levels reach their peak. This
board made their sexual frustration public by printing the
Columbia Twice Daily Masturbator as the title of their April
Fools' masthead (see next page).

Other ads tout Spec's influence on life. One ad reads,
smarmily, "I got my job through the Columbia Daily
Spectator!"
